Does testosterone change your personality? What human experiments actually show

Testosterone has a reputation.
More testosterone is supposed to make you more aggressive, more confident, more competitive, more reckless, and more dominant.
Depending on who is talking, that is either the reason men should raise their testosterone or the reason testosterone is treated like a biological problem.
Human experiments tell a much stranger story.
Researchers have given people testosterone and watched them become less willing to lie, less blindly trusting, and more likely to repay trust.
In one experiment, testosterone made men punish unfair people more. But the same men also rewarded generous people more.
Other studies found less generosity.
And several experiments suggest testosterone can make people less socially avoidant, less submissive, and more willing to face social threat.
At the same time, some of the biggest modern studies have failed to find a simple testosterone boost in confidence about your own ability, risk-taking, or willingness to compete. In a 2026 trial involving 1,000 men, testosterone actually lowered confidence in their answers while leaving their reasoning intact.
That sounds contradictory until you separate different kinds of confidence and different social situations.
Testosterone may not make you more certain that you are right.
But it may make you less likely to back down socially.
And when you put the experiments together, a recognizable behavioral pattern starts to emerge.
Testosterone appears to favor a more socially assertive, less submissive, more status-sensitive, and more guarded style of behavior.
That does not mean every high-testosterone person acts the same way. Existing personality, stress, provocation, and the behavior of other people can change how testosterone gets expressed.
But context-dependent does not mean random.
The same themes keep showing up.
The quick answer
Here is what the human research actually suggests:

The emerging profile is not simply “aggressive alpha male.”
It looks more like:
- greater sensitivity to status and treatment
- less automatic social submission
- less blind trust
- stronger responses to unfairness
- stronger reciprocity when someone treats you well
- more willingness to approach rather than avoid social threat
Before going further, there is one major limitation to understand.
Most of the strongest causal studies did not follow naturally high-testosterone men for years.
Researchers gave participants testosterone, usually once, and measured what happened a few hours later.
That is powerful because it can show that testosterone caused a short-term behavioral change.
But it cannot prove that naturally high testosterone creates a permanent personality, that raising your baseline testosterone will reproduce every effect below, or that testosterone replacement therapy will change your behavior in the same way. So when this article describes a “high-testosterone” behavioral style, it is describing a pattern that appears across testosterone studies, not claiming that every naturally high-T person has a fixed personality.
Testosterone is not the aggression switch people think it is
Start with the most famous testosterone stereotype.
Aggression.
A 2020 meta-analysis combined research on naturally measured testosterone, changes in testosterone after events, and experiments where researchers actually gave people testosterone.
Naturally higher testosterone did have a positive relationship with aggression.
But the relationship was tiny.
More importantly, when the researchers looked specifically at experiments that raised testosterone, the overall increase in aggression was not reliable.
That does not mean testosterone can never increase aggression.
A 2017 experiment shows why the real answer is more interesting.
Researchers studied 121 healthy men between 18 and 35. The men received testosterone or placebo without knowing which they had received.
Then they completed a laboratory task designed to measure aggressive behavior after being provoked.
The researchers also measured how dominant and impulsive the men already were.
Across the entire group, testosterone did not simply make men more aggressive.
But among men who were already highly dominant or had poorer self-control, testosterone increased aggressive behavior.
Men who were less dominant or had stronger self-control did not show the same effect.
That tells us something important about the profile testosterone seems to create.
It does not wipe out your existing personality and replace it with aggression.
Instead, testosterone appears to interact with traits that are already there.
A dominant, impulsive person facing provocation may become more aggressive.
A more controlled person may not.
The high-testosterone pattern may be more about status than aggression
Aggression alone does a poor job explaining the experiments.
A broader theory is that testosterone makes people more sensitive to social rank, respect, challenge, reputation, and how other people treat them.
That idea is easier to understand when you look at actual behavior.
Imagine someone treats you unfairly.
A status-sensitive response might be refusing to accept it or punishing the person.
Now imagine someone treats you unusually well.
A status-sensitive response could also mean rewarding them and strengthening that relationship.
Imagine someone challenges you.
You might become less likely to back down.
Imagine a stranger whose intentions are unclear.
You might become less willing to trust automatically.
Imagine a room full of people watching what you do.
Testosterone may change how much their approval affects your behavior.
That is what “status-sensitive” means here.
It does not simply mean trying to dominate everyone.
Across the studies, testosterone has been linked with resisting unfair treatment, protecting reputation, rewarding people who treat you well, becoming more cautious about trust, challenging deception, and showing less submissive behavior around social threat.
Those findings point toward a recognizable style: more socially assertive, more sensitive to rank and treatment, and less willing to yield automatically.
The exact behavior still depends on the situation.
That is why the same hormone can look aggressive in one experiment and cooperative in another.
Testosterone made men punish unfair people and reward generous people
In a 2016 randomized experiment, researchers studied 40 healthy young men.
The men received either testosterone or placebo.
Then they played a modified money game.
Another person would offer them money. After seeing the offer, participants could accept or reject it.
But they also had two other choices.
They could spend some of their own money to punish the other player.
Or they could spend their own money to reward them.
Men given testosterone punished unfair offers more.
That sounds like the classic aggressive testosterone story.
Except something else happened.
They also rewarded generous offers more.
The same testosterone increase made men respond more strongly in both directions.
Treat them badly, and punishment increased.
Treat them well, and reward increased.
That looks less like random aggression and more like greater sensitivity to how another person treats you.
It also helps explain why a high-testosterone behavioral style can look harsh in one situation and generous in another.
Does testosterone make you more honest?
There is a surprisingly interesting group of studies on testosterone and deception.
One of the best known was published in 2012.
In the experiment, 91 healthy men received either testosterone or placebo.
Then each man privately rolled a die.
The number he reported determined how much money he received.
Nobody could prove whether an individual man lied.
That gave participants an easy way to cheat for more money.
The testosterone group reported lower payouts.
At a group level, that indicated less self-serving lying.
But this finding needs a major caveat.
A larger 2018 replication tested 242 men.
The result pointed in the same direction, toward less dishonesty, but the effect was too weak to confirm by itself.
When researchers combined the original study with the replication, the overall evidence still pointed toward a small reduction in dishonesty.
So the evidence does not justify saying testosterone simply makes men honest.
But it does give us another result that does not fit the idea of testosterone as a purely antisocial hormone.
A poker experiment makes the pattern even more interesting.
Testosterone made women bluff less, even when bluffing could make more money
In another controlled experiment, young women received testosterone or placebo before playing a poker-style game.
In this particular game, bluffing strategically was useful.
Testosterone reduced random bluffing.
It also reduced bluffing with very weak hands.
At the same time, women given testosterone became more willing to challenge other players’ bluffs.
Those choices actually made them less profitable under the rules of the game.
The researchers suggested a possible explanation based on reputation.
Getting caught making an obvious bluff can damage your reputation.
Never challenging another person’s bluff can also signal that you are unwilling to confront them.
So testosterone did not simply push people toward whatever made the most money.
It shifted behavior in a direction that could protect reputation and resist being taken advantage of.
Put this beside the lying experiment and another part of the pattern appears:
Testosterone may sometimes make people less willing to deceive and more willing to challenge deception from others.
The evidence is not strong enough to call that a universal honesty effect.
But it fits the broader picture of a more guarded and socially assertive behavioral style.
Testosterone may make you less blindly trusting
Being trusting sounds positive.
But too much trust makes you easy to exploit.
A small 2010 experiment studied 24 women who received testosterone and placebo on separate days.
The women looked at unfamiliar faces and rated how trustworthy each person seemed.
After testosterone, trust ratings fell.
But the effect was not spread evenly across everyone.
It mainly occurred among women who were very trusting to begin with.
Women who already tended to be cautious changed very little.
The researchers proposed that testosterone increased social vigilance.
That simply means becoming more alert to the possibility that another person may not deserve your trust.
So testosterone did not turn already suspicious people into paranoid people.
It mainly pulled the most trusting participants toward greater caution.
That fits the emerging profile surprisingly well.
Higher testosterone does not seem to mean “trust nobody.”
It may mean trust less automatically.
Less trust, but stronger reciprocity
A 2013 study makes that distinction even clearer.
Testosterone reduced initial trust.
But when another person did trust the participant, testosterone increased how generously that trust was repaid.
That combination is striking:
Less automatic trust.
More generous repayment of earned trust.
This looks less like hostility and more like conditional social behavior.
Do not automatically give someone the benefit of the doubt.
But when they demonstrate trust or goodwill, respond to it strongly.
That is one of the clearest recurring themes across these experiments.
Testosterone can make you more generous and less generous
This is one of the clearest examples of why simple testosterone stories fail.
In a 2009 experiment, 25 men completed a money-sharing game after testosterone or placebo.
After testosterone, the men offered strangers about 27% less money.
They were also more willing to spend their own money punishing people who made ungenerous offers.
A newer experiment found something similar.
In a 2021 randomized study, researchers recruited 70 healthy young men.
Participants repeatedly chose between an option that benefited themselves and another that also benefited somebody else.
Testosterone reduced generosity.
If those were the only studies, you might conclude:
Testosterone makes people selfish.
But they are not.
Remember the earlier experiment.
Testosterone made men reward generous people more.
Another study found stronger repayment of trust.
And a 2023 experiment involving 120 men tested how quickly participants learned from rewards.
On each trial, the men chose between symbols. Through trial and error, they had to learn which symbols were more likely to produce a reward.
In some rounds, the reward went to the participant himself.
In others, it went to another person.
And in a control condition, it went to a computer.
Testosterone made participants update their choices from feedback more quickly across the conditions. That included the rounds where choosing correctly earned a reward for somebody else.
That does not mean testosterone made the men more generous.
It shows that testosterone did not simply suppress behavior that benefited another person. In this task, it increased how quickly men learned which choices produced those rewards.
Across these studies, a possible pattern is:
Testosterone may reduce unconditional giving while preserving or strengthening reciprocity.
In plain English, giving something away for no social reason may decrease.
But rewarding someone who has treated you well may increase.
That is still a hypothesis, not a proven rule.
But it fits the broader profile: less indiscriminate social behavior and stronger responses to how other people actually treat you.
Testosterone may change how you behave when people are watching
People often behave differently when somebody is watching.
They may donate more.
Share more.
Act nicer.
Researchers call this an audience effect.
A 2023 experiment tested 192 men who made social choices privately and while being observed.
Normally, being watched increased helpful or generous behavior.
After testosterone, that extra generosity from being watched largely disappeared.
The men's behavior became more similar whether they were being observed or not.
But there is an important complication.
A different 2020 experiment found testosterone increased an audience effect in another setting.
So testosterone does not simply make people ignore what others think.
It appears capable of changing how strongly people adjust their behavior when an audience is present.
Exactly how it changes that behavior depends on the social situation and what kind of behavior carries status or approval in that setting.
Does testosterone actually make you more confident?
Probably, in one important sense of the word.
But “confidence” can mean very different things.
You can be confident that your answer is correct.
You can be confident that you will win.
Or you can be socially confident: willing to hold eye contact, approach people, stand your ground, and not automatically retreat when someone seems threatening.
The testosterone research produces very different results depending on which kind researchers measure.
A 2024 paper reported two randomized, placebo-controlled experiments involving 91 men in one study and 242 in another.
That is 333 men total.
Researchers directly tested whether a single dose of testosterone increased:
- confidence
- willingness to compete
- risk-taking
It did not reliably increase any of the three.
Then came an even bigger result.
A 2026 randomized study involved 1,000 adult men.
The study was designed partly to retest an older finding that testosterone made men worse at catching tempting but incorrect answers on a reasoning test.
That older result did not hold up.
Testosterone did not meaningfully hurt reasoning.
But something unexpected happened.
The men given testosterone became less confident that their answers were correct.
So testosterone does not appear to be a simple “I am right and I am going to win” hormone.
But that is only one type of confidence.
When researchers look at how people behave around social threat, the picture changes.
Testosterone may increase social confidence
This may be one of the clearest parts of the high-testosterone behavioral profile.
Social confidence is how you behave when another person creates tension, threat, challenge, or the possibility of rejection.
Do you hold eye contact?
Do you approach?
Do you stand your ground?
Or do you automatically look away, create distance, or back down?
Several experiments suggest testosterone pushes behavior toward the first group.
In a 2015 experiment, researchers studied 18 women with social anxiety and 19 healthy controls.
The women with social anxiety tended to avoid the eye region of threatening or angry faces.
After testosterone, they were more likely to look toward the eyes.
Another experiment used interactive eye tracking.
Socially anxious participants tended to quickly look away from angry eye contact.
A single testosterone dose removed that submissive gaze pattern in the experimental condition.
And the pattern is not limited to eye contact.
A study of 82 healthy men gave participants testosterone or placebo and tested how closely they were willing to approach people displaying different emotions.
Testosterone reduced the distance men wanted to keep from socially threatening people.
In ordinary language, these are socially confident behaviors.
The participants were less likely to avert their gaze, less likely to create distance, and less likely to respond to social threat with avoidance.
So the common idea that testosterone is linked with confidence may not be completely wrong.
It may simply mix together two different things.
Testosterone does not reliably make you more certain that your judgment is correct.
But several experiments suggest it can make you more willing to face another person rather than withdraw.
For a social animal like a human, that is a meaningful form of confidence. That makes the opposite question worth asking too: whether low testosterone is linked with depression and greater therapy use in men.
Testosterone can also make collaboration worse
The same profile can have a downside.
A 2012 randomized experiment tested what happened when two people had to solve visual problems together.
Each person first made their own judgment.
When they disagreed, they then had to combine their information and reach a decision together.
Normally, working together improved performance because each person could use information the other had noticed.
Testosterone reduced that advantage.
Participants given testosterone were more likely to favor their own original answer instead of properly using their partner's information.
The important part is that testosterone did not make their own visual judgment more accurate.
They simply gave their own opinion more weight.
As a result, the pair got less benefit from working together.
That fits the broader profile too.
Being less willing to defer to another person may help when someone is intimidating you, manipulating you, or simply wrong.
But if the other person has useful information, the same tendency can hurt your decision.
Social assertiveness is not the same thing as always being correct.
Stress changes how the high-testosterone pattern gets expressed
Even competition does not produce one simple testosterone effect.
A controlled experiment involving 115 men raised testosterone before a math competition.
Researchers also measured cortisol.
Cortisol is a hormone heavily involved in the body's stress response.
Among men with lower cortisol, testosterone pushed behavior toward seeking status.
Among men with higher cortisol, the effect shifted toward behavior aimed at avoiding the loss of status.
Same testosterone increase.
Same basic concern with status.
Different strategy.
One person moves toward gaining rank.
Another becomes more focused on not losing it.
This is why context matters without erasing the overall pattern.
Testosterone may increase sensitivity to status, but your stress state helps determine what you do with that sensitivity.
Your existing personality changes how testosterone gets expressed
Testosterone does not enter an empty brain.
You already have a personality.
You already have different levels of self-control.
You already have a stress state.
You already have beliefs about other people.
And you are already inside a social situation.
The aggression experiment showed this clearly.
Dominant and impulsive men became more aggressive after provocation.
Other men did not show the same response.
A larger experiment involving 400 men found the same problem when researchers studied cooperation.
Testosterone did not produce one universal increase or decrease in cooperation.
Its effect depended on the man's personality and whether he had to answer quickly or had more time to think.
So the high-testosterone profile is not a rigid personality template.
It is more like a recurring set of tendencies whose expression changes depending on the person.
The Testosterone Context Model
A useful way to think about the research is:
Testosterone change × existing personality × stress state × social situation × status stakes
The testosterone component appears to push several recurring themes.
Greater sensitivity to status.
Less automatic submission.
More guarded trust.
Stronger reactions to fair and unfair treatment.
But the other parts of the equation determine how those tendencies come out.
Same testosterone, different person
A dominant or impulsive man may become more aggressive after provocation.
A high-self-control man may not.
Same testosterone, different treatment
An unfair person gets punished more.
A generous person gets rewarded more.
Same testosterone, different starting psychology
An unusually trusting person becomes more cautious.
An already cautious person changes very little.
Same testosterone, different stress state
Low cortisol can favor pursuing status.
High cortisol can shift behavior toward protecting against status loss.
That is why the studies can look contradictory while still pointing toward a recognizable behavioral pattern.
Testosterone does not only change behavior. Behavior can change testosterone
There is one more complication.
The causal arrow can point both ways.
Testosterone can affect behavior.
But winning, losing, and competing can also change testosterone.
A meta-analysis of competition studies found that winners tended to experience a greater testosterone rise than losers, especially in real-world competitions.
The effect was much weaker in laboratory contests.
And even the winner effect is not universal. Other studies have found no effect or even testosterone changes moving in the opposite direction.
That matters when we talk about naturally high-testosterone personalities.
Suppose successful, assertive, high-status men tend to have somewhat higher testosterone.
Did testosterone help produce those traits and outcomes?
Possibly.
But repeated winning, competition, and changes in social rank may also influence testosterone.
So real-world personality and hormone levels can shape each other.
So what does a high-testosterone personality look like?
The experiments do point toward a recognizable profile.
Not a rigid personality that appears in every person.
And not the cartoon version of an aggressive, reckless man looking for a fight.
The recurring pattern looks more like:
- more socially assertive
- less automatically submissive
- less avoidant around social threat
- more sensitive to status, respect, and challenge
- less blindly trusting
- more willing to confront unfair treatment
- more responsive to people who treat you generously or show trust
- more willing to rely on your own judgment, sometimes too much
That profile can produce aggression.
But aggression appears to be one possible output, not the defining trait.
A dominant or impulsive man who is provoked may become more aggressive.
Someone facing an intimidating person may become less avoidant.
Someone offered an unfair deal may punish it.
Someone treated generously may become more generous in return.
Someone who is unusually trusting may become more cautious.
Someone working with a partner may put too much weight on his own opinion.
The behaviors change.
But the underlying pattern is much more consistent than it first appears.
Is the high-testosterone personality better?
Not automatically.
Some of the recurring tendencies sound attractive.
- Less automatic social submission.
- Less avoidance of social threat.
- More socially confident behavior.
- Less blind trust.
- More willingness to confront unfair treatment.
- Less self-serving lying in one experiment.
- Stronger reciprocity after somebody earns your trust.
But the same profile has obvious costs.
- More aggression in already dominant or impulsive men.
- Less generosity in some situations.
- Too much weight placed on your own judgment during collaboration.
- Greater concern with protecting status in some situations.
- Lower initial trust.
- No reliable general increase in risk-taking or willingness to compete.
- No evidence that testosterone simply makes your judgments more accurate.
So higher testosterone does not appear to create a universally “better” personality.
But neither does the human evidence support the familiar picture of testosterone as a toxin that simply produces aggression, arrogance, and reckless behavior.
The behavioral profile looks far more socially functional than that stereotype suggests.
More assertive.
Less submissive.
More guarded about trust.
More sensitive to status and treatment.
More willing to respond when someone treats you badly, and sometimes more willing to reward them when they treat you well.
How those tendencies come out depends on the person and the situation.
But the pattern itself is hard to miss.
